Tarmac Riviera

Posted by Tom Haines, Globe Travel Writer July 28, 2007 04:58 AM

Sun shining strong upon the wooden deck chairs of the British Airways lounge in Heathrow Airport on a Saturday morning. Temperatures beyond the windows of the travelers' habitrail are said to be in the mid-50s.

No sign of the storms of recent weeks that have brought some of the worst flooding in a century to central and southern England.

In the BA lounge, a pit-stop before continuing on toward Arctic Norway, the only signs of water sooth: chilled bottles in the refrigerator, a bubbling fountain just behind the deck chairs.

Everything here predictable then. Indoors, at least. As the Guardian newspaper reports: "Nine-hour downpour forecast for weekend."
