Skybus plans cheap "Boston" to "New York" -- and Florida too

Dude. Not really, but sort of, so keep reading. This is the story. A little bird (actually TheAirDB) told me that Skybus is going to start offering service from "Boston" (Portsmouth, N.H., really) to "New York" (Newburgh, N.Y., which is really about 80 miles north of Manhattan for all of you geographically-challenged types).
What? You've never heard of Skybus? (You're so ignorant sometimes you're like embarrassing to hang with.) They're the guys who started up last year and they set aside 10 seats for $10 on every flight. And the real fares are pretty low, too. How do they do it? Well, first of all they fly into places that don't get used much or at all (but are sort of close to places where you might want to be). And they charge for EVERYTHING: Water costs $2 a bottle; checked luggage $5 a bag per flight; and pillows $12 each. My pal Nicole Wong wrote a cool story last month about what it's like to fly with these guys.
OK, so you don't care about the "Boston" to "New York" deal. Well, they're also planning to start flying from Springfield (you know, like Western Mass.? Like Basketball Hall of Fame?)
to Punta Gorda and St. Augustine, Fla.
Ultra-cheap flights to Florida. Hmm. Sound better? OK, now, you CAN'T get these deals just yet because, well, they're not soup yet. But I'm predicting in the next few days....(so shake yourself and start paying attention to Current Events, OK? Sha.)

  1. Like, learn how to write. Then write when there's finally a story. Sha.

  1. You're trying too hard to sound cool when you write. It makes you sound like an idiot.

  1. Since when do newspapers (on-line or paper) print stupid writing for idiots?

And why not state the obvious - you could drive from Boston to NYC in the time it would take to use the Skybus when you factor in getting to an from those airports.

  1. Flew Skybus last October; Portsmouth to Columbus. My return flight was cancelled for no reason and with no guarantee of getting flight back next day. Ended up paying $300 to fly back to boston on Jet Blue. You definitely get what you pay for on Skybus. My reccommendation: don't fly Skybus. Zero customer service.

  1. Nicole wrote a whining report on Skybus. Did she expect them to send a limo for her? Did she mention there was no charge for parking in Portsmouth?

  1. Do not fly skybus... they CANCEL flights and leave passengers stranded!!! BAD...BAD...BAD. The seats they talk about most, $10, are impossible to get.

Nope, not at all. Flew three people from Columbus-Ft. Lauderdale for $10 each way recently. They're not impossible to get - you just have to book early on the first day tickets go on sale. (And it's not hard to find out when that is).

  1. This seems to be, to me, a non-story written by a non-writer.
    It sounded stupid in delivery.
    Your readers deserve better.
    Try again.

  1. If they sell such cheap seats does that not mean they have to have the pilots and mechanics that will work cheapest as well? Is skybus the first or last choice for a pilot or mechanic to work for? If I get sick do I want the best doctor or the cheapest I can find? So which airline should I trust with my most precious possessions-my family to? No thanks, I'll pay a few more bucks to get the better mechanics and pilots, not the ones who could not get hired anywhere else. Unless you believe the best of the best want to work for the lowest wages and benefits. Oh yeah, the writer is a perfect example of getting what you pay for.

  1. Please tell me that you are "Assistant Sunday Editor" AND "High School Intern" for the Globe...otherwise I will get REALLY depressed about the future of journalism. My junior high paper would not have published this and the Editor would have laughed in my face if I had turned this in, even as a 12 year old. It's just bad journalism and sounds like so may Craigslist Rants and Raves postings; even those have the decency to refrain from affected teenage "mall talk".

  1. ACK! Poor and annoying writing aside, you couldn't pay me to fly out of either Portsmouth of Springfield. If it's outside of 128 it doesn't exist :-). But seriously, it's hugely inconvenient for anyone in most of Metro Boston. Maybe if we had public transit to Portsmouth or Springfield that was fast and direct, otherwise this is a non-starter.

  1. What airport is Springfield MA that can handle full-size jets? Last time I checked, Bradley is in CT...

  1. I don't understand why this is a published story. The content is good, but the writing is odd. It's not cute enough or clever enough to be hip and it's certainly not quality-enough to be published online here.

I'm not going to visit Boston.com for a few days. It's not worth my support if they're going to allow this type of story to be published.

  1. I thought the story was good.
By the way i own Skybus, and if i ever see any of you on the passenger list I'm going to cancel your flight on principle. You guys are all like bitter old women (who incidentally aren't allowed to fly Skybus).
