Amtrak shifts days for halt of Boston-New York trains
Nothing like waiting till nearly the last minute. Two days ago I wrote that Amtrak would be virtually suspending its Boston-New York service for four days starting Saturday as they replace the movable span of the 90-year-old Thames River Bridge, between Groton and New London, Conn., and perform a track maintenance "blitz."
They are still planning to do this but they will start on Monday instead of Saturday. So if you are looking to hop either an Acela or a regular train to the Big Apple this weekend you should be cool. Regular schedules will remain largely intact, save two late evening trains on Sunday.
The only other change will be that Amtrak will add a couple more runs to get you from Boston to New York via Springfield and Hartford -- a five- to six-hour trip that I essentially don't consider optimal Hub-Big Apple service.
As I wrote a couple days ago, there will be some shakeout for area commuters. So I have a call out to the T to find out what this change will mean locally. Before this shift, the T wasn't expecting it to be a big deal. Here are details of the old plan.
Stay tuned.
