US Airways to halt domestic in-flight movies, music

Posted by Paul Makishima, Globe Assistant Sunday Editor July 9, 2008 06:31 PM

US Airways plans to stop offering movies and music on domestic flights. The carrier says it will begin pulling video systems in November. The equipment adds about 500 pounds to a plane's weight so increases fuel use. That, combined with a decline in customers willing to pay $5 for headsets, led to the decision, according to The Philadelphia Inquirer. US Airways estimates the move will save about $10 million a year in fuel and other costs.
The in-flight movies and music will still be available on transatlantic and Hawaii flights.
US Airways says it will test a lighter, seat-back TV system this year, but installation of new equipment will be a ways off.
