There was a point in the early 1800s where sheep outnumbered humans in Vermont at a rate of about 5 to 1. A state steeped in its history still celebrates that and this weekend is its 20th Annual Sheep and Wool Festival, held at the ginormous Champlain Valley Exposition in Essex Junction, Vt.

Spinners, knitters, farmers and those just liking their wool hats and alpaca swaeters can find much to delight in at the fair. There will be a variety of fiber-producing animals on hand, with much information to be shared. Sheep, llamas, alpacas and goats will thrill the kiddos while you talk shop with getting that pattern done on that sweater that still sits in your closet, half done, and missing one arm. There will be hands-on workshops, tons of food and music.

Festival runs Sept. 6-7. Entry forms to participate in the following contests: Multi-generational Contest, Children’s Handspinning Contest, Open Gallery, Handspun Yarn Contest, Fleece Contest, and Make it with Wool You can be found here. You can also print a coupon here for a $1 off admission.
