Turnip lovers listen up

Posted by Kimberly Sherman October 22, 2008 07:58 AM

Now while I am a root vegetable enthusiast, I just can't bring myself to like turnips. Ew. Wardsboro, Vt. however, sees the good in the Gilfeather Turnip, enough so to honor it with its very own festival, to take place this Saturday, Oct. 25 at the 6th Annual Gilfeather Turnip Fest.

John Gilfeather propagated his first turnip in Wardsboro in the early 1900s, and the rest is history. Come bask in turnip soup, mashed turnip, and try several turnip tastings. Live music will play at your back, entertainment for the kids at your feet, and Gilfeather turnips at your tongue. Festival runs from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Wardsboro population may only be 854, but there is enough pride, energy and enthusiasm here for thousands.

  1. On the Outer Cape, we grow a special variety of turnip called an Eastham Turnip, which has crisp white flesh, and is sweet. We also have the annual Eastham Turnip festival in November (11/22/08 12-4PM at the Eastham Elks), honoring this special root crop. I am one of the few farmers who grows this heirloom, so I thought I would mention it.

The festival is a lot of fun, with recipe tastings, folk music, turnip decorating contests, farm market, etc.
