Old school...
...I use the term loosely here as it tends to have negative connotations. However, this weekend, Nov. 7-8, is the Open House, Open Studios at the North Bennet Street School, where fine craftsmanship is honored, the old school way.
Free to the public, and no reservations needed, just a little North End know-how, and good sneakers, to witness furniture makers, bookbinders, piano restoration, violin making, jewelry makers and other artists creating their craft before your very eyes. This event offers a unique behind-the-scenes look at one of America's oldest schools of craftsmanship in Boston's historic North End. A free shuttle bus on Friday will provide rides to the school's Arlington, Mass. campus to view its preservation carpentry training program as well.
"Serious amateurs looking into short workshop courses, as well as aspiring artisans considering full-time employment will find this annual fall tradition an informative - perhaps even inspiring - look at the school's working studios and training methods."
Holiday shopping can be very special here. Finished student and alumni work is available in the school's first floor Gallery store ... jewelry pieces range from a feasible $45 to a better-plan-for purchase of $3,000; hand-bound books can range from $20 to $250, handmade furniture starting at $600, and a nice selection of crafting tools starting at $2. Even a few restored pianos!
The event is accessible via public transportation (Orange line via Haymarket; Green line via Haymarket or North Station). Visit online or call 617-227-0155 for more information. Studios open on Friday, Nov. 7, 10 a.m.- 2 p.m.; Saturday, Nov. 8, 10 a.m.- 3 p.m. Refreshments are complimentary, and the sites handicapped accessible.
