A year ago today, four renowned big wave surfers set off on a harrowing 100-mile trek through stomach-churning waters off the coast of San Diego and surfed some of the biggest waves ever ridden.

The surfers caught a narrow window of clear weather between two storms at Cortes Bank, an area out in the middle of the Pacific Ocean where an underwater mountain range generates massive surf. The recent storm had kicked up the surf, producing waves in excess of 80 feet and offering these big wave surfers the rides of their lives.

Surfline.com produced a really cool multimedia piece on the voyage, with plenty of stunning photos and narration by Mike Parsons, who caught an estimated 85-foot wave out on the bank. Check it out.
