This economy really bites -- in this case into Big Apple hotel rates.
New York room occupancy rates fell 24.6 percent to 55.8 percent for the week ending Jan. 24, compared with the same period a year ago, according to Smith Travel Research. But here's the big news for travelers: Average daily room rates slipped 18.1 percent to $192, according to Smith.
And, actually a quick look around shows that visitors can do much better than that.
Newyorkology offered this survey of some hotel deals:

From the Tablet boutique booking engine:
The Alex - $49
Hotel Gansevoort - $60
Royalton - $80
Hudson Hotel - $95
6 Columbus - $99
Gild Hall - $99
Sofitel - $189
SoHo House - $255

Hilton’s New York on Sale:
Hilton New York from $159
Millenium Hilton from $159
Waldorf-Astoria from $175.
The Hilton Garden Inn New York/Tribeca, which opened last month with rooms from $199, next week offers rooms from $149.

Deals from Hotels.com:
Ameritania Hotel - $107
Radisson Lexington - $109
Radisson Martinique - $109
Paramount - $119
Empire - $179

At Quikbook:
Affinia 50 - $144
Shoreham - $157

Deals, especially for lodging, abound. If you can afford to travel this year, life is good.
