Evander Preston 1.jpgA friend  just released from the Leavenworth pen was expected any minute when I caught up with Evander Preston in his beach side universe of Pass-a-Grille in St. Petersburg, Fla.

Besides his renown as a stand-out eccentric and jewelry designer, Preston recently took over the local brew master mantle from the late August Busch, Jr., whose former Pass-a-Grille compound spreads over a bay front block. You can try Evander Beer  at the artist's jewelry store on Eighth Street, buy it at Shaners Land & Sea Market (2000 Pass-A-Grille Way), and order it at restaurants around town.

Among other changes I noted in the 31-by-one-block historic neighborhood : The Comfort and Joy porch front farmer's market is sadly no longer, but the sunset bell rings as ever at the sunny yellow beach concession, which now serves dinner -- and beer and wine -- under a new name: Paradise Grille.
