Joining its major rivals, American Airlines says it's pushing up fees on checked bags for most passengers buying tickets starting Feb. 1.

Charges for  the first checked bag will rise to $25 from $20 on domestic flights and those to Puerto Rico and U.S. Virgin Islands. Fees for a second checked bag will rise to $35 from $30.

In the past week, United lifted its baggage levies to match those of Delta, Continental, and US Airways.

With this move by American, Southwest is alone among the six major US carriers in letting fliers check two bags for free.
