Going local in Puerto Viejo

As you head out to your winter getaway in Puerto Viejo, look for the little ATEC office with an Internet Café in the center of town when you land. The Talamancan Association of Ecotourism and Conservation is a community-run nonprofit offering tours – from dance classes to transcontinental hikes -- with guides drawn from the diverse local cultures of the area. With so many Costa Rican tour operators marketing the "eco'' and "green'' theme, the choices can be overwhelming -- but not in Puerto Viejo. ATEC is the only nonprofit whose members live and work in the community to keep it that way. See what they have to offer here.
