This is the first big airfare sale by a major carrier I've seen that extends through the summer. AirTran is offering discount fares through Thursday for travel through Nov. 2. There are, however, several catches: Lowest fares are available on Tuesday and Wednesday; 10-day advance purchase is required; and there are a series of blackout dates throughout that period. Here's all the fine print.

The good news is that SmarterTravel.com is reporting that the AirTran fares are being matched by American, Continental, Delta, Frontier, US Airways, and United on competing routes.

From Boston, here are some sample one-way fares: Baltimore as low as $43; Milwaukee $79; Atlanta $84; Raleigh-Durham $89; Akron/Canton, Dayton, Fort Lauderdale, Indianapolis, Jacksonville, Memphis, Orlando, Pensacola/Gulf Coast, Richmond, Tampa, West Palm, Sarasota, Bradenton $94; Charlotte, Dallas/Fort Worth $104; Bermuda, Chicago/Midway $109; Cancun $119; Denver $144, Las Vegas, Los Angeles $154. And there are others.
