If nothing else, its name has promise. The Valley of the Sun, located in the Phoenix area, has some pretty spectacular scenery, and one resort there is offering a winter deal. The AAA Four Diamond-rated resort, Pointe Hilton Tapatio Cliffs, has winter rates for suites starting at $109 a night. The resort is on a cliffside in the heart of Phoenix, and the property also includes the Lookout Mountain Golf Club, where green fees start at $75 for the winter. The course has earned the Golf Digest four-star award for nine straight years and Zagat rates it as one of America's top courses.

The resort also has a mountaintop restaurant, the aptly named Different Pointe of View, and adjacent lounge, The Terrace Room, where specialty dessert liqueurs can be had with the view of the city skyline. The $109 starting rate runs from Nov. 1-Dec. 31. After that, through Feb. 1, it jumps to $159. For info and reservations, visit www.pointehiltontapatiocliffs.com or call 800-947-9784.
