Over 350 tons of special silt-laden sand was trucked in to Revere Beach for the competition. The silt helps bind the sculpture together. Left, volunteer Cliff Moore of Lawrence "pounds up" the sand. The process packs the sand in wooden frames. Sculptors start at the top of the mound, standing on the lower tiers as they carve downward. All frames and external supports must be removed from the final entries.
