Revere Beach, seen through a sand sculpture in progress by Thomas Koet of Melbourne, Fla., during the sand sculpting festival on July 17.
Because of the weight of the sand, "cutaways" like the star shape shown at left are difficult to achieve in sand sculpting. Competition sculptures can not use any internal supports, and must withstand the elements during the competition.
