Longfellow's Wayside Inn

72 Wayside Inn Road, Sudbury

What we liked most: Checking in by signing our names in a thick red leather-bound register.

What we liked least: That the gristmill was closed.

What surprised us: The extent of the grounds and associated buildings.

You know you're at the Wayside Inn when . . . old floorboards creak.

Rates: Double rooms $122-$155, including breakfast. Our room, No. 7, was $135. Winter getaway package, Sunday-Friday, $150 for room and dinner and breakfast for two. Entrees $17-$26.

Directions: About a 45-minute drive from Boston. Take the Massachusetts Turnpike (Interstate 90) west to Interstate 95 north. At exit 26, pick up Route 20 west for 11 miles. Veer right at the large green sign for Wayside Inn Road. The inn is one-quarter mile on the right. Park behind the inn.
