The White House

of Wilmington

178 Route 9 East

Wilmington, Vt.

What we liked most: The array of black and white photographs of the home's first owners, which lend historical charm and authenticity.

What we liked least: The smell of chlorine in the hallways, apparently from the swimming pool in the basement.

What surprised us: The secret staircase, with a bookshelf facade fronting the exit.

You know you're at the White House of Wilmington when . . . the other guests want to talk about ghosts and spirits that may or may not be present.

Rates: Rooms $145 to $262 weekends, $118 to $208 midweek. Dinner: appetizers $7-$10, entrees $19-$31.

Directions: Wilmington is about 130 miles from Boston, about a 2 1/2-hour drive. Take Route 2 west to Interstate 91 north. Take exit 2 heading toward Brattleboro. Turn right on Route 9 west and proceed 18 miles. The inn is on the right.
