My husband and I are going to a ballgame at Yankee Stadium. We plan to stay in Stamford, Conn., and take the Metro-North Railroad in to the game. Could you recommend a hotel near the train station?
B.S., Hubbardston
With Stamford being the business hub that it is, you have your choice of the big chains, from Westin, Marriott, and Sheraton to Holiday Inn and Super 8, all clustered around the station.
If you're looking for more character, you might want to consider the just renovated (to the tune of some $2 million) Chesterfield Inn at Shippan Point (chesterfieldatshippan.com). A circa 1862 white Colonial Revival mansion with a wraparound porch and just a few minutes south of the station, the inn was renewed by John Ruddy, a Stamford contractor who happens to be the grandson of the previous owner. Downstairs, historical remnants collected by Ruddy tell the story of the area's past, while the nine guest rooms upstairs are outfitted with elegant antiques, stained glass windows, Bulgari amenities, wireless Internet access, and flat-screen TVs.
It could be a great base for you and your husband, but if you are bringing the kids - alas, no guests under age 14 allowed.
