The Brookline Bird Club, among the region’s better established birding groups, frequently conducts walks, including four in December. They’re free and open to the public. Newcomers are welcome and no registration is required. For info on a scheduled site or what to expect, call the trip leader listed in the schedule.

Dec. 7 morning: Arnold Arboretum. An easy two-hour walk from the Main Gate to Bussey Hill and back.

Meet at Main Gate off the Arborway at 8:30. Directions and bird checklist: www.arboretum.harvard.edu, Bob Mayer, 617-983-3330.

Dec. 7 afternoon: Birds Along the Merrimack River, Newburyport to Salisbury. Search for eagles, short-eared owls, and wintering ducks, gulls, and finches.
