Prowl for owls
Listen in the night as owls call, then see if you can draw them into the open. Owl Prowl, a guided walk, is one of many programs offered by the Trustees of Reservations at their 100 properties covering 25,000 acres in Massachusetts. At Bartholomews Cobble in Sheffield on selected Saturdays at 10 a.m. theres also a Winter Walk Series to introduce children and adults to birding, winter photography, nature writing, and tracking wildlife.
At Crane Beach in Ipswich, another Trustees property, in December you will probably see late migrating sandpipers and plovers, flocks of horned larks and snow buntings, marsh hawks, snowy owls, and seabirds, says Russell Hopping, ecology program manager. At Notchview Reservation, Windsor, you have a good chance of seeing most forest species that winter over in Massachusetts. Notchview, a 3,100-acre reservation thats an extension of Vermonts Green Mountains, is a premier site for snowshoeing and cross-country skiing.
