Birding in New England

Slender Granite State perch

Seacoast Science Center in Rye makes the most of the state’s limited shoreline. It’s a popular place to view coastal birds, especially after storms. ‘‘Birders should dress in layers and assume it will be windier along the coast than inland,’’ advises Henry Burke, school program and camp coordinator. ‘‘A good place to spot birds is right outside our building on the rocky shore.’’ Burke says you are likely to spot the common loon, purple sandpiper, golden crowned kinglet, and bufflehead. At the center’s front desk, pick up a seasonal checklist of birds spotted in the park or stop into the store for a guidebook.

Seacoast Science Center, 570 Ocean Blvd., Odiorne Point, Rye, N.H., www.seacoastsciencecenter.org, 603-436-8043.
