
In 1990, the Amistad Memorial was built on the state's Amistad Trail, paying tribute to the 53 Africans who escaped their slavery by overpowering the crew of the ship, Amistad.
It was in New Haven that the group was jailed in a legal case that would determine whether or not they would gain their own independence.
