The story was less happy for loons in New Hampshire. This is the only surviving chick this summer on Umbagog National Wildlife Refuge. At least this chick was surviving as of last week. None survived last year. The number of chicks on the state's three largest lakes, Umbagog, Winnipesaukee, and Squam (7) tied the 1975 and 1980 record for lowest-ever recorded number.
