The land that is now Brenton Point State Park, a windswept hunk of gorgeous green field hard by the sea in Newport, R.I., was called in Colonial times a place "where a man can farm with one hand and fish with the other." There's no farming here now, but there is fishing. And in Rhode Island, this is the prime place for it, with 90-plus acres on the ocean's doorstep. You will always find a breeze and thousands of kite enthusiasts as a result. All manner of kites abound here, all of them dancing in the wind above delighted onlookers. The only drawbacks are finding a parking spot on sunny days - and getting the song "Let's Go Fly a Kite" out of your head on the way home.
