Lighthouses of New England

At 123 feet, this is one of Maine's tallest lighthouses. Originally built in 1817 as a tower that was just 50 feet tall, federal inspectors deemed the light too short in 1851 since it could only be seen 8 miles out. The Lighthouse Board ordered that a lighthouse with a minimum height of 120 feet be built, which was accomplished over the next four years. The Coast Guard still owns and maintains the lighthouse.
