When the going gets tough, the tough need to breathe deeply and do the Down Dog. Thats what my friend Sue, the yoga instructor, advises, and shes right about most things. So my goal this year is to worry less about stretching the dollar and more about stretching my spine. (And my quads and hamstrings and obliques.) Im hoping to explore weekend workshops in different venues, learning positions and techniques to incorporate in travel exercise and relaxation regimes. Close to home, the Back Bay Yoga Studio (1112 Boylston St., 3d floor, 617-375-0785, www.backbayyoga.com) offers classes and workshops in a variety of yoga styles. Beginning in March, the center will host a Friday night Hip Hop Yoga class that promises sweat mixed with fun. In Western Mass., the Kripalu Center for Yoga and Health (Stockbridge, 866-200-5203, www.kripalu.org) offers two- and three-night weekend workshops including Yoga Basics for Beginners, Thriving in Stressful Times, and, for those who embrace their inner snow-person, a Snowshoeing and Yoga program. In the Green Mountain State, Yoga Vermont (197 College St., Burlington, 802-660-9718, www.yogavermont.com) offers weekend workshops in studios along the Winooski River. The 2009 schedule includes Restorative Yoga sessions as well as a Down Dog Sunday workshop.
