How to get there

From Boston, take Interstate 95 north to Bangor and follow Route 9 north to Beddington. Head east on Route 193 to Harrington. Pick up US Route 1 and continue east to Columbia Falls. Take Route 187 to Jonesport and cross bridge to Beals Island. About a six-hour drive.

This bed-and-breakfast is housed in the town's former telegraph office and ship chandlery. Breakfast fare is lavish. Rooms $85-$110.

Stop for a coffee and homemade strawberry rhubarb cobbler and listen to locals tell tall tales at the long ''Liars' Table" in the front room. Or dig into a clam basket in the back dining room. Lunch $6-$20. Monday-Friday, 6 a.m.-7 p.m.; Saturday 6-2. Closed Sunday.

Second Annual World's Fastest Model RC Lobster Boat Races Perio Point Lobster Pound, Beals Island July 1 9 a.m.-4 p.m. Racing starts at noon.

Great Wass Island Preserve

The Nature Conservancy


In Jonesport, cross bridge to Beals Island. Follow the road, which turns to dirt, for about 3 miles to 1,579-acre Great Wass Island Preserve at Black Duck Cove. Bring water and a windbreaker and wear sturdy shoes for hiking trails. The 1 1/2-mile Mud Hole Trail takes 2-2 1/2 hours.
