Ayuh: When you hear "Aloha" you right off think of Hawaii. When you hear "Shalom" you think of Israel. When you hear a crude, vulgar expletive you look around for a Massachusetts drivah. In the same way when you hear "ayuh" you think of Down East. Although many tourists have tried, none has succeeded in pronouncing the word correctly. If you heah the word "ayah" pronounced awkwardly here in Maine, chances ah there'll be a camera-totin', Bahmudah shawts-wearin', NewYawkTimes-readin outah statah in Berkinstocks and sun glahsses in the vacin-ty.
