To the south of the city, seeing the Portland Head Light should be part of any travelers itinerary. Classic in form and nestled in a picturesque setting, the lighthouse was constructed under the orders of George Washington and it is Maines oldest surviving lighthouse. A fort nearby protected Portland during World War II from German U-boats and has been transformed into an expansive park.
