Captain Jack's Wharf

73A Commercial St.

Provincetown

What we liked most: The ramshackle charm, the sounds of the water, and the sense of history that permeates the place.

What we liked least: The fact that the place fills up so quickly, and that we can rent only weeks in high season.

What surprised us: The overwhelming sense of peace and quiet, even with so many other cabins occupied.

You know you're at Captain Jack's Wharf when . . . the water flows right under your room, and there's deck space everywhere you look.

Rates: Captain Jack's is open through Sept. 30. As of press time, one cabin was available for the week of July 29-Aug. 5, and two were available for Aug. 19-26. After Sept. 9, three-night rentals are available on the weekends of Sept. 16, 23, and 30. Rates are $1,100-$2,600 a week during high season and $700-$1,800 a week or $100-$258 a night off-season.

Directions: Provincetown is 120 miles, or about 2 1/2 hours from Boston, depending on traffic. Take Interstate 93 south to Route 3 south to Route 6; take the third left into town. Turn right on Commercial Street, and follow it into the West End. Captain Jack's Wharf is on the left.
