PORTSMOUTH, R.I. - Green Animals Topiary Garden will mark the change of seasons with a Fall Family Festival Saturday.

Children will be able to build full-size scarecrows of hay and dress them in old clothes. There will also be face painting, jewelry making, and leaf crafts. Storyteller Cindy Killavey of Portsmouth, making her third appearance at the annual event, will tell tales with fall themes from 2 to 3 p.m.

Several local nurseries will sell perennials for fall planting, and the gift shop will have Dutch bulbs. Food vendors will also be on site.

And children can bid farewell for the season to the garden's larger-than-life animals and birds, some nearly 100 years old, and all sculpted from California privet, yew, and English boxwood.

Fall Family Festival, 10 a.m.- 5 p.m., Green Animals Topiary Garden, 380 Cory's Lane (off Route 114). 401-683-1267, newportmansions.org. Adults $11, children ages 6-17 $4, under 6 free.
