There's nowhere quite like Newport, not even in novels

"I love Newport," writes John Jakes in the afterword to his novel "The Gods of Newport ," citing the city's authenticity and adding that "if you've never seen Newport, go."

That is good advice even if you have seen it. In summer, the city sparkles as the unique shops and restaurants beckon visitors and residents alike. Meanwhile, on Bellevue Avenue and elsewhere, the fabled mansions give you a peek at the lives of the super-rich in the late 19th century, and several other sites tell you about Newport's rich history.

Although summer is hardly bargain time, there are packages that should enhance your enjoyment. Among them:

The Cliffside Inn and Adele Turner Inn both offer a Best of Newport package featuring the best available stateroom or luxury suite for two nights plus a bottle of regional wine, a tour and tasting at Greenvale Vineyards, tickets to the Breakers mansion and the International Tennis Hall of Fame, plus a Destination Deal Book with discounts at other attractions, restaurants, and shops. The price at the Adele Turner Inn is $475 weekdays and $575 weekends. At the Cliffside Inn, the cost is $575 and $675. The offer is available through Oct. 22.

Bookings are only by phone at 800-845-1811 . The website is legendaryinnsofnewport.com.

For those bubbling with affection for each other, the Newport Spa & Whirlpool Suites offers a Captain's Romance & Bubbles Package . A night's accommodations in a newly renovated guest room with a whirlpool for two, a bottle of champagne, and a deluxe continental breakfast is $159, Sunday through Thursday. The offer is valid through Aug. 30.

Because it's nice to see Newport from the sea, the Admiral Fitzroy Inn has a two-night Midweek Sailing Package, highlighted by a sailing tour for two aboard the schooner Adirondack II or Madeleine or aboard the Sightsailer, a racing sloop. In addition, participants get a $25 certificate toward dinner for two at the Smokehouse Café on the harbor and a continental buffet breakfast each morning. If sailings are canceled, the inn will refund the ticket cost or offer a substitute activity. Prices start at $385.
