9. Essex Steam Train & Riverboat
Later this month, the Essex Steam Train makes a cameo appearance in the latest Indiana Jones movie. Alas, Harrison Ford wont be along for the excursions through the Connecticut countryside behind a steam locomotive. The train travels from the 1892 Essex Station to Deep River Landing, where passengers can switch to the Becky Thatcher riverboat for a cruise on the Connecticut River. Kids will also get a kick out of the interactive museum next to Essex Station, where they can ring the bell and take the throttle in a diesel train simulator.
1 Railroad Ave., Essex, Conn.; 800-377-3987, 860-767-0103; essexsteamtrain.com; train and boat $26, ages 2-11 $17, train only $17, 2-11 $9, family pass available.
