7. Winnipesaukee Scenic Railroad
The Winnipesaukee Scenic Railroad travels seven miles each way along the lake shore from Meredith to Lakeport, passing homes and resorts and even cutting through a few marinas. Like its sister railroad, the Hobo, the WSR runs 1920s and 1950s vintage cars behind a 1950s diesel locomotive on its two-hour journey. Passengers can disembark midway for the beaches and amusements of Weirs Beach, but then they miss the turnaround, where the train rests and the engine moves around to latch to the other end. For a treat, see if caboose seats are available.
154 Main St., Meredith, N.H.; 603-279-5253; hoborr.com. Begins service Memorial Day weekend. Adults $14, under age 12 $11, under 3 free, caboose rides $15 for all passengers.
