NORTH CONWAY, N.H. -- This town's Fourth of July celebration will last a week to commemorate Independence Day and to showcase its extreme makeover , a new look that includes brick sidewalks, planters, and lighting.

During the North Conway Village Festival July 3-8, the town bursts with concerts, family activities , tours, train rides from a Victorian-style railroad station , and more.

A guided village walk and ribbon-cutting opens the festival July 3 , followed by a day of family games, food from local restaurants, music, and fireworks at night in Schouler Park .

Since outlets and shopping are synonymous with North Conway, sidewalk sales are set for Thursday as well as a juried two-day artisan fair.

Boston Music Award winners Entrain rock the night in a free Concert in the Park Thursday. On Friday, the funk and blues of the Wicked Smart Horn Band fill the mountain air.

Bring the kids to the Mount Washington Observatory 's Weather Discovery Center on Main Street for a Friday weather workshop.

Friday through Sunday the Conway Scenic Railroad hosts "The Little Engine That Could , I Think I Can" rail tour with storyteller, musical performances, and other family-oriented entertainment as North Conway declares its independence from construction.

Directions: North Conway is about 135 miles or nearly three hours from Boston. Take Interstate 95 north into New Hampshire to exit 4. Bear left onto Spaulding Turnpike and merge onto Route 16 north.
