What to do

Depending on the weather, which determines whether sap is still being gathered and boiled, visitors can watch syrup being made. Even if it's already in the bottle, the big evaporators, tubes, and filters make for a great science lesson. And fresh syrup, candy, and other maple products are on sale inside.

Where to eat

The following Massachusetts sugar houses operate restaurants featuring dishes with locally made maple syrup. All are open weekends during the March to mid-April sugaring season, but menus and serving times vary (usually breakfast and lunch). Call ahead for hours, and arrive early. See www.massmaple.org for directions.
