Poison ivy sap contains urushiol, a compound that is the active oil people are allergic to. Since the oil in poison ivy is such a highly potent substance, items that the oil come in contact with remain potentially hazardous for months. If there isn't sunlight to bleach it away or water to wash it away, Sachs hypothesized urushiol could stay contained in areas for 50 years.
