A Big week for Precipitation

Posted by Ethan Binns February 5, 2008 07:05 AM

Keep a close watch on the radar loops and the updated snow conditions at your favorite areas this week.

What happens up in the mountains over the next half dozen days or so will be crucial for skiing conditions in New England for the better part of February.

Many areas are in recovery mode from the Friday ice storm. Machine tilled surfaces have ruled the roost over the past several days. New snow would be very welcome. They are getting a little bit this morning. For conditions check this LINK.

Good News: Groundhog Phil says, “Six more weeks of Winter!"

Not so good news: What could have been an absolute dealmaker of a weather system for New England ski areas turned out to be the NFL’s version of the New York Geeeee-men, for myself at least, a major deal breaker.

Fact: The half inch of ice that fell Friday was not good for skiing conditions.

S.G. Update: I have been out of commission a bit lately. I was fighting of a fierce bout of cold/flu/sinus infection last week. It rendered me useless by Friday. That was actually a blessing in disguise, because instead of trying to make a white knuckled drive north Friday night I was stuck on my futon reading reports of how bad roads actually were.

Anyhow, after some necessary down time, I was able to venture north and catch up with some friends for the game. I had preempted a Super Bowl celebratory ski day by taking Monday off. Nothing shocking about that, I do this every year, regardless of the Patriots chances.

After a 4-hour dose of windshield time, I was up at Jay Peak, VT. The destination was never really in doubt. Given the forecasting in regards to last Friday’s weather event, if anywhere was going to get pounded with snow, it would be Jay Peak.

Reality Check: The Patriots lost. There was not a huge dump, even all the way up at Jay. The long-range weather does not look so hot from a skier’s perspective.

I did get some fresh air and turns in Sunday and Monday, which did wonders for the mind, body and soul. More on this in a day or two…

Think Snow!!!
