Three Vermont trails among world's scariest
You won't get any argument here. Three Vermont resorts make the cut in Travel and Leisure Magazine's list of the world's scariest ski slopes: Black Hole at Smuggler's Notch, Mad River Glen's Paradise, and Goat at Stowe.
Here is video of each of the three that the magazine included with its descriptions:
(The Black Hole comes in around 1:15.)

Goat was my first thought when I saw the title...
they look kinda flat. I do not think any true skier would label these "scary" They are good training trails for more advanced glade runs.
Good to see Northern VT get its due as the powder spot of the East!
Of course, it ain't always good, but when it's good, it's really good...
clearly, eric wilbur has never skied out west, or in Europe. As far as the east, there are tougher runs at Sunday River and Sugarloaf - I guess they don't advertise in Travel and Leisure....
EW: I'm just relaying other information- those aren't my personal picks. But at Sunday River? Eh, some nice, challenging terrain, but more "scary" than say, Goat? No.
those trails are great fun when theres some decent snow. pure nightmare when there isnt. heh heh. there are some other pretty remarkable steeps on stowe and smugglers. i hope we get some nice dumps this winter!!
there are tough trails at sugar bush in vt.. fyi
The first video is sweet. But seriously? You couldn't find better videos for the other two?
I'm not even going to get into the debate about the scariness of these trails.
EW: Again, "Here is video of each of the three that the magazine included with its descriptions:"
I was wondering if anyone knows how these trails compare to Tuckerman Ravine. Tuck's isn't glades but it's scary as h---, steep with granite things to avoid.
Should have included Starr at Stowe, that one's brutal. And I always thought the right-hand side of Devil's Fiddle at Killington was nasty.
Scary? Are you kidding? In my experience there isn't a single lift serviced trail on the east coast I would call scary. Tuckerman Ravine might be on the list, but you have to earn it to ski it.
Scary for who? Scary is very much the wrong word to be describing east coast ski trails. There are lift access trails out west and in Europe that are so steep that if you fall, you could easily die...now thats scary.
most resorts in northern new england have many trails "off the map' cut by locals.Scary? I'd say no. most advanced "off piste' skiers find cliffs and death rock out croppings to be kinda scary. Ya know those tracks going off into the woods? they're not skiers going to pee. there's truly an ancient sub culture of creek bed ,deep woods skiers. Hey EW ,how about a space for private trails on private land? Usually accessed by snomobile. you won't believe what's out there.
Tuckerman's is fairly tame by Western/Canadian standards. The challenge is more in the 2.5 mile hike than in skiing the terrain itself.
Those last two videos are $h!te. Couldn't do better, Globe?
While all of these trails are difficult to ski in tough conditions, you're not going to get hurt or risk death on any of them.
After looking at the list itself on Travel&Leisure's website....it's quite ridiculous. Nothing in the East can possibly compare to S&S Chutes @ Jackson (which is far more terrifying than Corbett's, imo), and saying that Black Hole @ Smuggs is scarier is downright laughable. Great Scott @ Snowbird makes Goat look like a bunny hill. Clearly the magazine has it's east coast readers in mind and wants to make them feel included when they trek up 91 to Northern VT.
And leaving off Face Chutes @ Jay in order to further fluff Stowe's over-rated reputation is a travesty. If you've got to cater to your audience, at least be semi-factual.
Heh.
Worlds Scariest? East Coast?
Gimme a break.
East coast market fodder.
Agreed, Tuckerman is tame but it is certainly better than anything on the east coast from that list if for nothing more than the fact you have to hike it to ski it! :o)
Whoever put this list together doesn't seem to have ever skied.
LOL scary? Nothing in the East is scary. Try a 55 deg. slope in Europe or a no-fall trail like Body bag at Crested Butte....now that's scary!!
If you fall of any of these you aren't going to die. There are about 50 runs I can name in Colorado, Wyoming, Utah, Washington without even going to Canada or Europe that make these runs look like normal hard runs. None of these are even approaching 50 degrees, so give me a break with scariest. The only thing scary on the east coast is the snow conditions.
Get Raw At Squaw!
What's scary are the hairy Vermont women!! Watch out now!
I'm actually a 55 degree slope, so I'm getting a kick out of a lot of these responses.
Typical East Coast media bias...this list is a friggin joke. I grew up skiing the East and thankfully moved West...there is so much more challenge out here it's ridiculous. How can this list not have anything in Cali? Squaw has some of the sickest lines in North America, so does Whistler....what about Aspen Highlands? No mention of these here. What about the Big Couloir at Big Sky? You're telling me Goat is scarier than that? LOL
Least Coast skiing...ha ha
New England skiing
How can you not include the Molly Hogan face at A Basin? I'm seen some really scary lines there, esp. around 4pm on an April afternoon!!!
