Brown ground just doesn't say "Christmas in New England." If you want to assure your family a winter wonderland for the holiday, I suggest you take them to The River. Maine's preeminent ski resort, Sunday River, has been blowing snow since October, so the wintry scene is set with skiing on all eight peaks. Our family skied there last weekend, and we found tons of trails to explore (60 at last tally) and an exhausting roster of extracurricular activities too.
Sunday River has ramped up its resort offerings in recent years. Now you can Zip Line, tour the "Snowflake factory," enjoy a dog sled or sleigh ride, roast s'mores slopeside, see fireworks and fire dancers, ski at night, or send the kids to their own "kids night out" while you enjoy some aprŤs ski entertainment at the Foggy Goggle or dining at The Peak Lodge, riding the Chondola up the mountain in the evening. Of course, if you ski all day on Sunday River's speedy lifts, you may just want a steamy hot tub, dinner and a pillow.
