"My husband and I did a three-day kayaking trip to Johnstone Straight (between mainland Canada and Vancouver Island) as part of our honeymoon. The area is known for its native Orca whale population. My husband and I shared a two-person kayak. While I was screaming in terror, he snapped the last 3 pictures on our roll of film -- and came up with this photo. The whale dove under our kayak and missed us by about three inches. Both of us swear he knew exactly where we were and how much room he needed to miss us. Definitely an exciting start to our marriage!"
John's take: "All I could think of was what a situation to be in: a 'sea monster' closing in. It looks like a scene from 'Jaws.' This was one of the most extreme situations you could be in, and to react with this beautiful photograph is amazing. I don't know what I would have done. Like most photographers, we shoot first and then think about what just happened. This photo stood out among the rest, and captured the essence of the theme of this competition."

About the judge

John Tlumacki has been a staff photographer at the Boston Globe since 1981. There's not much he hasn't seen, including covering three Winter Olympics, several Super Bowls, and the fall of the Berlin Wall, for which he was a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize. When on assignment shooting icebergs in the North Atlantic, he had an opportunity to fly an Air Force C-135. He crashed in a hot-air balloon race that took off from Foxborough when the basket hit the top of a tall pine tree off Interstate 95. He also took the last known photo of fugitive Whitey Bulger wearing a white Red Sox baseball cap. John is a graduate of Boston University, magna cum laude from the College of Communication. He resides on the South Shore with his wife, Debra.
