
4. The Colossus of Rhodes
The life of this awe-inspiring statue was short lived, just about 56 years, after being constructed with the "spoils taken from the enemy" to "kindle the lovely torch of freedom," according to its inscription. But its enduring message of unity of the people of Rhodes, a Greek island, lasted longer than its 110-foot physical structure which paid tribute to the Greek god of the sun, Helios.
