Celebrations in India
India also has a number of harvest festivals. One of the most popular is that of Pongal, a three-day festival that starts on Jan. 14 each year. The celebration is named after the main rice dish of the festival. Over the three days, people honor the rain gods, the sun, and cattle for their contributions to the success of the harvest. Families gather to celebrate by sharing their crops and, of course, Pongal, in a community feast.
