The Eiffel Tower, France
At the time of its opening in 1889, the tower was the world's tallest building. Only in 1930 was it eclipsed by New York's Chrysler Building. Proud of his monument to his country, Gustave Eiffel wrote on one visitor's fan, "the French flag is the only one with a 300 meter pole." The tower was not selected as one of the modern seven wonders.
