Mini buses depart Ho Chi Minh City's western bus station (Ben Xe Mien Tay ) for Can Tho every hour, on the hour . The 4-to-5-hour trip costs $5 per person . You can book a Mekong River tour package at most hotels and tourist cafes that includes transporation by bus to Can Tho from Ho Chi Minh City and back.

Boat tours can be booked through any hotel in Can Tho or by walking down to Ninh Kieu Quay on the river. With the latter, you can negotiate a price with a private tour guide. The going rate is $5 per person -- but at least $10 per boat -- for a four-hour tour. It is customary to tip the guides a few dollars at the end .

Where to stay

For reasonably priced, clean accommodations, try Xuan Mai Hotel, 17 Dien Bien Phu, an upper-end budget hotel $10 to $15 per night. An upscale option is the German-owned Victoria Hotel Can Tho (victoriahotels- asia.com), a five-star hotel on the river , with rooms $150 to $250 per night.
