This year's festival opened July 7 with a new production of ``The Pirates of Penzance." It continues in repertory with new productions of two other classics: Rossini's ``The Barber of Seville " and Janacek's ``Jenufa," both with projected English titles . The latter marks the return to Glimmerglass of director Jonathan Miller . The highlight of Glimmerglass this year is the world premiere of ``The Greater Good " by composer Stephen Hartke . The opera is an adaptation of Maupaussant's celebrated short story ``Boule de Suif," set during the Franco-Prussian War.

AMSTERDAM Through Dec. 31
In celebration of Rembrandt's 400th birthday, the Rijksmuseum is presenting an array of exhibitions honoring the Baroque master. English filmmaker Peter Greenaway's ``Nightwatching," which runs through Aug. 6, is a theatrical installation inspired by Rembrandt's celebrated painting ``The Nightwatch. " That canvas is among the many notable paintings to be found in ``The Masterpieces ," which runs through the end of the year and which includes works by such other Dutch artists as Vermeer , van Ruisdael , and Steen . Rembrandt was also a master draftsman, of course, and the Rijksmuseum is presenting in two installations the 60 drawings of his in its collection: ``The Storyteller," which runs Aug. 11-Oct. 11, and ``The Observer ," Oct. 14-Dec. 31.

LONDON July 22-Sept. 24
The opening of any new Tom Stoppard play is an event. His latest, ``Rock `n' Roll," has lived up to expectations. It opened last month to glowing reviews at London's Royal Court Theatre . The production now takes up new quarters at the Duke of York's Theatre for a limited run. Starring Brian Cox , Sinead Cusack , and Rufus Sewell , and directed by Trevor Nunn , the play offers Stoppard's usual intellectual fireworks but this time with a stronger emotional grounding. It involves two other great Stoppard passions: his love of rock music and loathing of Soviet Communism. From 1968- 90, love and ideology intersect in the lives of three generations of the family of a Cambridge political scientist who's a Marxist.

The location is prime, a block from the Eiffel Tower. The price tag is impressive, $295 million. The design, by architect Jean Nouvel , is controversial. As the first big museum to open in Paris since 1986, the Musée du Quai Branly has been in operation for less than a month and it's already generated great, and not always admiring, attention. Its collection, which is devoted to non-Western art, numbers some 300,000 objects from Africa, Asia, Oceania, and the Americas.
