Known in other cities as funiculars, ascensors have plied the hills of Valparaíso, Chile, for more than 100 years. "This ascensor started working in 1902," says Christian Salazar, who has operated the El Peral ascensor for 12 years. "We didn't have taxis or buses then. These came before everything."
