AUG. 23-24

VENTURA, Calif.

Aloha Beach Festival: Picture a vacationland where boys and girls spend afternoons surfing, grown-ups frolic with Frisbees all day, and entertainment comes in the form of hula dancers. This place exists, and for a weekend, it's closer than Hawaii. The Aloha Beach Festival is a celebration of the spirit of "aloha," a concept defined by the festival as "kindness, unity ... modesty, and patience expressed with perseverance." Activities at this celebration of all things happy include a "share the stoke" surfing event and a "Frisbee Freestyle" competition that will have people doing tricks (including dance and gymnastics) as they throw the disc. There will also be performances by the aforementioned hula dancers, and handouts from surf-friendly vendors such as Patagonia. Free. Surfer's Point, west of Ventura Pier. 805-648-2662, alohabeachfestival.com.

JULY 26

ROCHESTER, N.Y .

Rochester Rattlers: Fans can travel to see our local lacrosse team, the Boston Cannons, take on the Rochester Rattlers on the road. The perk of seeing this matchup is that Cannon Mikey Powell will be taking on his brother, Rattler Casey Powell. There's nothing like sibling rivalry with big sticks. Ticketholders will get an official Casey Powell player card just for showing up. 7:30 p.m. $10-$20. PAETEC Park, 460 Oak St. 585-232-1900, rochesterrattlers.com.

AUG. 2

WALL TOWNSHIP, N.J.

Gigantic Yard Sale: Not far from Asbury Park, the Historic Village at Allaire hosts a massive daylong flea market. The village says there will be new and used items for sale, as well as summer treats like hot dogs and funnel cake. You'll also be able to tour the village museum, which is something like Old Sturbridge Village (people wearing bonnets and reenacting the past). 8 a.m.-3 p.m. $5 per car. Historic Village of Allaire, Allaire Road, 732-919-3500, allairevillage.org.

AUG. 28-SEPT. 1

DANSVILLE, N.Y.

New York State Festival of Balloons: Want to see hot air balloons color the sky in the Genesee Valley? If the weather cooperates, a launch of 50 balloons is scheduled to kick things off. There should be six launches (and a car show on Sunday). According to the festival, most of these balloons are larger than the average house. $5, free for children under age 12. Dansville Airport, 176 Franklin St. 585-335-6920, nysfob.com.

PLAN AHEAD

NOV. 22-23

SHARONVILLE, OHIO

Victory of Light Psychic Festival: Those looking for answers may find them this fall when psychics, tarot card readers, astrologists, and dream interpreters convene to tell you what will happen to you and why. Guests include Victor Paruta, a Cincinnati psychic who has been on "The View," and Lai Ubberud, author of "Celebrity Pets Tell All." 10 a.m.-7 p.m. both days. $15 for weekend pass, $20-$40 for readings. Sharonville Convention Center, 11355 Chester Road. 513-929-0406, victoryoflight.com.
