The CapeFlyer doesn’t really fly. But the train doesn’t sit in traffic either as it rolls from South Station down to Hyannis, the Cape’s own hub. Even better, the most dreaded part of the journey — crossing one of the two auto bridges over the Cape Cod Canal — is now the most fun. Instead of the stall-and-crawl on the highway, the CapeFlyer rumbles across the ingenious railroad lift bridge, which is lowered for trains and then raised to allow ships to pass beneath. Train service to Cape Cod was last offered in 1984 under the Dukakis administration. We ran into the former governor greeting riders on a Sunday night train back to Boston.
